Carberry, John H.

Of Harwich, formerly of Waltham, died Thursday, November 30, 2017 at his home. He was 85. John was born in New Haven, Connecticut on October 14, 1932, a son of the late Johnand Unetta (Quinn) Carberry, and moved as a child with his family to Somerville. After high school he served with the United States Army during the Korean War. A graduate of Northeastern University in Boston he later earned a Master's degree in education from Boston State College. He was a longtime teacher at the Fitzgerald Elementary School in Waltham and later directed Waltham's Title I Program. John also taught and was assistant principal at Northeast Elementary School before his retirement. In addition to his other educational endeavors John taught night courses for Waltham's ESL program at the high school. In August, 1957 he married Newton native Elizabeth A. "Betty" Greeley in Our Lady Help of Christians Church and four years later the couple made Waltham their home. Following retirement John and Betty moved to Harwich where he was able to indulge his passion for golf at Cranberry Valley Golf Course. They also spent many happy winters in Sun City Center, Florida. In addition to his wife of sixty years, Betty, he leaves his children, Jack Carberry and his wife, Megan, of Newton, Robert Carberry and his wife, Mary, of Norton, James Carberry of Waltham, Karen Serdy and her husband, Robert, of Sandwich and Edward Carberry of Waltham; his sisters, Anne Prince and Mary Lou Arsenault; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
